Sharing decades of experience in creative spaces, media, events, arts and advocacy, our board and staff are committed to growing the capability of this already well respected community association. Rooted in our communities, our team members are passionate about respecting cultural sensitivities ya lo ples.
Who we are
Located on the main street of Waiben, Thursday Island – Port Kennedy Association is a long-standing, community-owned and operated, non-governmental organisation (NGO) with an objective of benefitting Zenadth Kes communities first and foremost. Serving our communities directly means we are able to platform the voices of yumi people, advocate for funding for yumi peoples’ projects and advise governments on issues affecting yumi people ya lo ples.
We are also a conduit for programs and services to our communities and offer our expertise in assisting our communities in the facilitation of their events or projects. Port Kennedy Association and our Hall are also an asset to national stakeholders who wish to connect with Zenadth Kes through business or events.

We aim to cultivate opportunities for our communities to connect, such as regular events. In addition, one of our objectives is to assist in establishing services for the communities of Zenadth Kes

Mina beautiful, ailan-style, handmade adornments, dresses, menswear and custom items. Beautiful leis of every colour and flower come through this stall, perfect for your next celebration. Business owner, Mele, also has you covered for every ailan-style material, often having sarongs, table cloths and material by the meter for dressmaking. Stall holder, She has a constant renewal of these bright, colourful items.
Kazu Pearls
Decades of experience with pearl shell harvesting and carving; Kazu Pearl brings pretty pearl shell carved pendants, earrings, pearl inlay jewellery and scrimshawed pearl items.
Thursday Island Wakayama Kenjinkai
The very first Wakayama Kenjin Kai prefecture based in Thursday Island, these families share two very old cultures; Japanese and Torres Strait Islander. On occasions, the group hold their own markets and cultural exchange events in the Hall, sharing Japanese foods and ornaments, ilan dance, kaikai and pearl diving history. We are also lucky to see stalls at our mini-market with Japanse decorative ornaments, good luck charms and small kaikai treats.
Rosie Ware Designs
An award-winning Textile Designer & Printer, Rosie Ware, further brightens our market with her artistic collections. Rosie is known to print her vibrant designs on everything from post cards and tea-towels to elegant silk scarves and clothing. As all ailan women love their shells, so does Rosie, often sharing jewellery she has made from shells she collects from her island home. Her inspiration comes from her culture, the maritime history of the Torres Strait and the beautiful islands and marine environment that surrounds her.
The Art Hut
The Art Hut provides contemporary art activities and arts for sale that are inspired by nature and life in the Torres Strait. Jewellery thoughtfully made from local seeds and driftwood and fabrics and materials are upcycled to other artistic creations.
